Week 8 Posts._ Krashen's Monitor Model(Group B)

Hello, Group B! (Mia, Ellie, Esther)
Here are three comprehension questions I give you as a discussion leader.

Q1. According to Stephen Krashen(1982), what are five hypotheses?

Q2. Does 'Acquisition' means 'learning'? If not, what is the difference between 'acquisition' and 'learning'?

Q3. What is the Krashen hypothesis's problem?
 
And here is a discussion question. Can we prove hypotheses's evidence like affective factors?

  1. 1) The five hypotheses are (1) the acquisition-learning hypotheses; (2) the monitor hypotheses; (3) the natural order hypothesis; (4) the input hypothesis; and (5) the affective filter hypothesis.
    2) No, because 'Acquisition' happens with no conscious attention to particular forms, on the other hand, learning is the conscious process of study and attention to form and rule.
    3) The theory has criticized for failing to propose hypotheses which can be tested by empirical research. Most teachers and researchers see much which is intuitively appealing in his views. There is little doubt that communicative language teaching, with its primary focus on using language for meaningful interaction and for accomplishing tasks, rather than on learning rules, has won support from many teachers and learners.
    DQ: Currently, even though I am trying to think it over, specific evidence for the each hypothesis is not really coming into my mind.I would like to know your ideas, opinions about this during the class :)

  2. As a HL for this time, here are 7 words I chose.
    1) 'Acquisition' happens with no conscious attention to language form and it is very similar way which children just naturally use their first language without the language rule, form concentration.

    2) ‘Learning’ is the conscious process of study and needs the attention to form and rule.

    3) ‘Learning’ cannot turn into ‘Acquisition’. For example, most speakers can be fluent without awareness about the learned rules, but they mostly fail to apply the rules on their saying, when they pay attention on what they want to say rather than on how they are saying it.

    4) In ‘Acquisition system’, it can be lack of correctness , since it more focuses on fluency, meanwhile ‘Learning system’ only acts as ‘monitor’ or ‘editor’ to check the correctness, taking some time and using the rules which they already learned.

    5) ‘The input hypothesis’ is that one acquires language by only exposure to comprehensible input and it is called as ‘i+1’.

    6) ‘Affective filer’ is the comprehensible input barrier.

    7) ‘Affective’ refers to the learner’s own motives, needs, attitudes and emotional conditions.
