Group E: Haeyun, Rachel, Sunny_Week 9 'The output hypothesis'

Hello members,

Here are the questions.

1. According to the Output Hypothesis, when the acquisition may occur?

2. What does ‘extended discourse’ mean?

3. According to the Output Hypothesis, What kind of activity is useful for second language learning? And Why?

And this is discussion topic

: According to Olsen & Kagan, for successful collaborative learning, 5 components are needed. Among that components, how teacher make the task produce positive interdependence?

Thank you. If there is something mistake, please let me know

  2. 1) Language acquisition may take place by producing that language by speaking it or writing it.

    2) Extended discourse refers to opportunities for lengthy discussion during which the could push their linguistic competence to its limit as they attempt to express their ideas.

    3) Collaborative activities in which the target language is the focus of discussion are useful for second language learning. When students reflect together on their own output, reprocessing and modifying it as their collective knowledge permits

    Discussion Q

I think that the teacher has to focus om the development of social skills to make the group work become effectively.

  3. Some application points

    In class rooms
-Teachers could use error correction as a means of feedback to students
-In class could end with a group discussion in which the students are able to negotiate meaning and arrive at the accurate form or meaning.

  4. 1. Three Comprehension Questions
① Output hypothesis maintains the language acquisition occurs when we say something and our conversational partner does not understand, forcing us to notice a gap in our competence.
② Extended discourse refers to opportunities for lengthy discussion during which the could push their linguistic competence to its limit as they attempt to express their ideas.
③ The output hypothesis suggests that a particular genre of collaborative activities might be especially useful for second language learning. Because students can practice target language effectively doing the collaborative activities.

    2. Discussion Topic
Teacher can make the task produce positive by giving each group member a task and letting them interact to complete their activity.

    3. Summary as a summarizer
The first reading source is about output hypothesis. The essence of output hypothesis is to make learners to be pushed to do better. There are four ways in output hypothesis. The first way is language production which focus on fluency by using the language frequently. The second way is producing language which forces the learner to move form semantic processing to syntactic processing. The third way is hypothesis testing to try out of expression and see if they work. The fourth way is feedback which can lead learners to modify their output. The second reading source is about comprehension hypothesis. There are variables of comprehension hypothesis, such as out hypothesis and combination hypotheses.
